The Last Shout Of The British Governments Ufo Hotline
The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) closed its UFO hotline in 2009, having taking an interest in UFOs since 1952. An average of 150 reports a year were received from 2000 to 2007, but courtesy of camera phones, reports doubled to 208 in 2008 and then tripled to 643 in 2009, draining the MoD's resources and causing what Reuters described as "a close encounter of the credit crunch kind." The salary of the employee dedicated to UFOs was USD68,180/GBP44,000/EUR51,560 per annum. The closure was ostensibly on the grounds that UFOs did not threaten the security of the nation, and the money was better spent on other ventures. David Clarke, the UFO historian who wrote "The UFO Files", remarked that the Ministry preferred to file these things away. UFO quote factory, Nick Pope, who once worked for the UFO hotline, mentioned that the file title, "Persistent Correspondent," was "MoD code for 'This person is becoming a nuisance.'"
